Kids' chasing game with head taps / MON 1-1-24 / Off Broadway musical made into a 2021 film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda / Tokarczuk who won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature

Monday, January 1, 2024

Constructor: Harry Zheng

Relative difficulty: Easy (solved Downs-only)

THEME: XXY — three-part phrases where the first two parts are identical:

Theme answers:
  • DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE (20A: Kids' chasing game with head taps)
  • TICK, TICK, BOOM! (27A: Off Broadway musical made into a 2021 film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda)
  • HIP, HIP, HOORAY! (43A: Reply to "Three cheers!")
  • THERE, THERE, NOW (51A: Soothing words)
Word of the Day: "TICK, TICK, BOOM" (27A) —

Tick, Tick... Boom! (also stylized as tick, tick... BOOM!) is a 2021 American biographical comedy musical film directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda in his feature directorial debut. Written by Steven Levenson, who also serves as an executive producer, it is based on the stage musical of the same name by Jonathan Larson, a semi-autobiographical story about Larson writing a musical to enter into the theater industry. The film stars Andrew Garfield as Larson, alongside Robin de JesúsAlexandra ShippJoshua HenryJudith Light, and Vanessa Hudgens.

Tick, Tick... Boom! had its world premiere at the AFI Fest on November 10, 2021, and began a limited theatrical release two days later, before streaming on Netflix on November 19. The film received acclaim for Garfield's performance, the editing, and Miranda's direction. It was named one of the best films of 2021 by the American Film Institute, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, and Best Picture at the 27th Critics' Choice Awards. For his performance, Garfield earned numerous awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, as well as a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor. Hello and happy actual new year! Gonna have to be a short one tonight because as I am writing this it is still, in fact, night—New Year's Eve, to be exact, and since we've already been out to a special dinner and I've already had a *little* to drink, I am a *little* not up to my usual laser-focused and erudite writing self, as you can probably tell by this sentence that I am currently writing. In short, I am already a bit tired, and want to spend what's left of the year just hanging out in my pajamas with my wife and cats. Maybe you can relate, Maybe you can't. It matters not. Here's a photo of my wife getting a tarot reading at the fancy dinner we went to earlier:

I didn't get a reading tonight because I had one done last New Year's Eve (same establishment, different reader) and the next day I got COVID, which I took as a clear message not to mess with the Dark Arts. But my wife can do whatever the hell she wants. Seems like she got a hopeful and positive reading, which does not surprise me, you're not exactly gonna tell someone they're gonna get gout and their hair's gonna fall out this year. Not before dessert, anyway. Here's the menu for the evening, which includes an in-the-wild sighting of NYE (3):

And here's me, the goer-outer, after having gone out (also pictured: Alfie, sullenly waiting to be fed):

And now, the first puzzle of the year ... sure, sure, fine. A little word waltz, one-two-three, one-two-three ... or one-one-three, I guess. Would've been nice if the set had been tighter. DUCK and TICK start out a nice -CK pattern, but then that fades. TICK, TICK, BOOM! and HIP, HIP, HOORAY! are both Exclamation Point-worthy ... and maybe DUCK, DUCK, GOOSE! is as well, but "THERE, THERE, NOW" is not. What's the opposite of an exclamation point, because that is what "THERE, THERE, NOW" should have. Also, the phrase is just "THERE, THERE," or else it's "THERE, NOW"—"THERE, THERE, NOW" feels like an odd mash-up of the more common, shorter soothing phrases. All the other opening pairs need their third element to make sense, whereas "THERE, THERE" absolutely does not. So it's an outlier, and kind of a big one. As I say, the set could be tighter. But it's totally inoffensive, so shrug, whatever, I'm not mad.

Solving Downs-only was a piece of cake today. I weirdly, bizarrely forgot what a [Bacon slice] was called ("... slab? ... rasher?") but got it easily once the crosses got inferrable. The biggest sticking point today was TRA-la-la!" for "OOH-la-la!" (38D: "___-la-la!") Luckily I got "COPY THAT" without much trouble, and since CTATS is not (as yet) a thing, it was out with TRA and (eventually) in with OOH. CTATS became COATS. And that was pretty much that. Why would you go and ruin your puzzle by putting ELON in there? Serious unforced error. I'd rather see HODA Kotb in my puzzle any day (I'm sure an ELON-free grid can be done better than this, but I'm just spitballin' here)

Or here, just go with the abbr. on ELEM, no one will care!

Or you could just clue ELON as the North Carolina university. That's all. Here are some more Holiday Pet Pics to start your new year off right:

["Yes ... yes, all for me ... this all going according to pl— No! Higher, higher, you stupid human, I need a challenge!" (thanks, Eric)]

[Elvira is hiding until this holiday business is over, thank you very much (thanks, Louise)]

[Exactly how you'd expect a cat to look when it realizes the present is from a dog (it's true!) (thanks, Rebecca)]

See you tomorrow.

Easy-medium. Pretty darn smooth but I was looking for something to tie everything together (as @Rex noted CK didn’t last). I guess X X Y will have to do. That said, liked it.

Mediterranean would fit.

Did not know OLGA as clued.

Croce Solvers - Croce’s Freestyle #872 was an easy-medium Croce for me. The SW and the center were my toughest sections. Good luck!

GILL I. 1:36 AM

So URDU is being all KOI about the GOOSE STU he AGED with some ACIDIC DUCK fat. He COATS it with THAT STRIP of PHO HOE so it will FORM GOOS in his cast IRON pan. He is known to PIRATE the recipe from his NOW wife, IRIS STROP. He wanted to see how she'd REACT TO this REFORM PLOY of his.

IRIS STROP ate A LOT of OREOS. You just had to look at a HIP here and a HIP there. Her RETRO KHAKI pants would BOOM as she danced the HULA in her HULU on a POLE. She'd COPY OLGA, her. KIN, to SCORE a STRIP CHAIR, STAND on a DESK with her LASSO, shout HURRAY and try to RiLE up URDU who was busy with his ACIDIC DUCK fat.

URDU was a CONDUCTOR of A LOT of REFORM. He needed IRIS STROP to REACT with some BOOM BAM to his GOOSE STU. She was on BOARD with this PLOY of his and was HIP to try his PHO HOE. "HERESY!!!! she would OOH...."You did PIRATE my recipe!!!!!" "U better HAUL CLAWS out," she'd RILE...."Your GOOSE is about to become DUCK soup!!!!"

URDU sent out an SOS to the TORSOS. They were on the DUCK TICK HIP COUNCIL and might CURE this WOE. They did!

The COUNCIL made URDU RATE IRIS STROP's GOOSE STU. BAM, just like THAT he changed his TUNE. Hers could REFORM TOI and moi. She was the GOOSE GURU and had the HIPS to prove it.

"I won't COPY nor PIRATE your STU" URDU OOH's..."OURS is AGED love that needs no CURE!"..."SURELY you'll forgive me!"

IRIS STROP did. She continued, though, to BOOM as she danced the HULA in her HULU on a POLE. URDU found a DUCK recipe of his own. It was a love FEST now....ELON sold them a HONDA and they took off to MERYL LAKES in a UHAUL. The IGLOO......? It was cold ISH.

And that's the truth!

@Rex - Something looked a little off about the Parlor City Vegan menu. Wait for it ..... wait for it .... It's not Vegan! Just thought you'd want to know in case you could get your money back.

As the Good Witch, before joining the TONTON MACOUTE said to BAM BAM RUBBLE, "TOTO, TOO!" But since the weather wouldn't heed her cries of RAIN RAIN GO AWAY, she had to call OLLY OLLY OXEN FREE and lip sync SHIMY SHIMY COCOA POP.

HNY to all who survived their NYE.

I came here an hour ago, saw there were only 3 comments, just came back and there are still only 3. Now it dawns on me: it's 6 AM on the East Coast! I'm having a hard time remembering I'm in Oxford -- last night I tried to stream the Times Square celebration when my watch showed 11:45, forgetting that it was 6:45 in Times Square.

So I'm solving online. I finished with errors-fixed all that I could fine and then steered at the screen for 5 minutes until I noticed that one of the Os in GOOSE was actually a zero. Doh!

My substantive problem was that I would've said HIP HUP HURRAY!

Ah well, nice puzzle. Congratulations, Harry Zheng, and Happy New Year to all!

Wanderlust 6:22 AM

Easiest downs-only solve ever. I actually beat my average, which includes years of pre-downs-only solves. That has never happened. The theme definitely helped because all four went in easily with few crosses. COPY THAT seemed like it was meekly holding up its hand to say, “I’m sort of a revealer … maybe?” Works for the first two words but not the third.

Egs beat me to the question about that menu, Rex. Why is a vegan restaurant serving crab cakes, mozzarella and chicken? It’s like they are saying, “Our New Year’s resolution is to be vegan but here’s one more meaty meal before we take the plunge!” Anyway, looks delish.

My five favorite original clues from last week
(in order of appearance):

1. What one might say when the coast is clear? (4)(2)
2. It's usually taken outside (5)
3. Signal for a change in direction? (3)
4. Device placed under a tongue (4)(4)
5. Star sign? (9)

Solved it (mostly) downs only and still almost set a personal record. ELON is fair game for a Monday, the OLGA lady not so much, and the Rugrats dude would be a hard “no” for me.

It's like the dog that never barked -- it's the chicken that never clucked, and the cheese that never [whatever cheese does]. It must be chicken, cheese, etc. made from soy or other vegan products. If you are in reach of Denville or Montclair NJ, you might enjoy Veggie Heaven -- Chinese food that takes the same approach. Delish

Son Volt 7:53 AM

Cute theme - well filled. Didn’t know the Miranda musical but the other themers were common enough. Liked that SE block of CLAWS - IGLOO - LAKE.

Mother, mother ocean

Some questionable fill here and there - side eye to the GOOSE x GOOS cross. Crossword friends STROP, OREOS and TIARA show up. RETRO HERESY is the best kind of HERESY.

A pleasant New Years morning solve - cold, rainy and crummy weather but hopefully the first of many enjoyable puzzles this year.

Hey hey RP. Thanks for sharing "Hey Paula."

But --

I've waited so long for school to be through -- Paula I can't wait no more for you.

"No more?" Seriously? What the hell kind of school is that? Paul -- get back in school. And Paula -- you can do better. Sheesh.

HNY everybody -- Happy and healthy.

Andy Freude 7:58 AM

I never understood why the title of “Hey Paula” left out an essential “hey.”
Words cannot express how deeply that little ditty impressed itself on my seven-year-old brain back in 1963. How can such trivial things loom large in memory and psyche?
Glad you had a lovely night out, Rex. Mrs. Freude and I were asleep by 10, as usual. We figured it was already 2024 somewhere. HNY to all!

Lewis 8:21 AM

There I was, playing putt putt golf, in the wild wild west, making goo goo eyes at a tse tse fly in a paw paw tree; it responded with an aye aye sir, and a knock knock joke…

Ahh. A new year, a new constructor, and a three-beat theme that got me copycatting. Augers well for the year ahead.

Lovely serendipities. STRIP over STROP, seven double O’s, and a rare-in-crosswords semordnilap (STROP). Plus the sweet PuzzPair© of MERYL STRIP.

And a constructor with promise – a teen with a NYT puzzle after but a half year of constructing experience. That is a feel-good story, and thank you for that, Harry, and for a puzzle that brought warm smiles!

A big thank you!! to @Rex for his dedication and labor of love in keeping this blog going for all these years, and hats off also to all his guest bloggers, and to all who have done such a great job of moderating. 🌟

Thx also to @Rex and all the contributors for the pet pics! 😽 🐶

Downs-o (relatively easy); except for one d'oh moment!!

Originally had COUNseL, but had to change the 'e' to 'I', due to IGLOO. Didn't pay attention to the 's', tho. No excuse for having COUNseL in the first place, tho, as I was a COUNseLlor, and have served on my strata COUNCIL. I don't think I'll get caught making that mistake again.

Had COPY THAT right off, then deleted it for some reason; eventually reinstalled it.

Same process as @Rex re: STRIP.

Enjoyed the final season of Ted LASSO.

Just finished listening to 'ELON Musk' by Walter Isaacson. A very informative book by one of my fave authors. Inspires me to go back and read some of his previous works.

A most excellent adventure in downs-only land; liked it a lot! :)

Thx, @jae; on it! :)

My grandson Leon (6) has a unique approach to knock-knock jokes. He says Knock knock. Then I say "Who's there?" Then he repeats "Who's there?"
So then I say, "Hey that's my line," but we're usually both roaring by then.

Dr.A 8:33 AM

Looking sharp @Rex! Happy New Year! And if anyone has NOT read Drive your plow over the bones of the dead by Olga Tokarczuk Then you have your New Year’s Resolution! One of the best I’ve read. Cute pets
Very easy puzzle. I think we all have answers we dislike (for me it’s Emir and Ural). Oh well.

Anonymous 8:36 AM

Unlike everyone else, I solved on acrosses! Went smoothly all the way through - I’m a musical kid and a millennial/gen z cusp, so I know my Rugrats and LMM - and came back to fill in the gaps on downs. Quick and easy, faster than average at 3:29 though a little over half a minute slower than my best time. I agree with Rex on THERE THERE NOW which felt weaker than the other themers, but not horrible. I’d say short and sweet.

kitshef 8:47 AM

If you only have four themers, you should have more than two good ones.

THERE THERE THERE is only about a million times as common than THERE THERE NOW. (Okay, let’s call it 400 times as common.)

And it's really odd to have a themer WoE on a Monday (TICKTICKBOOM).

There are plenty of familiar good potential themers out there - @Lewis lists a few.

gfrpeace 8:47 AM

I had REFORk for 'turn over a new leaf', thinking about my compost heap, which is pretty leafy. Which made the Broadway musical TICK TICK BOOk. Which sounds just as plausible to me. Anyhow, Happy New Year to all!

kitshef 8:48 AM

Croce Freestyle 872 was easy, with a bit of resistance in the NW and SW thanks to WoEs at 5D and 59A.

Anonymous 8:56 AM

The first great wrong answer of the new year 🎉 ~RP

pabloinnh 8:57 AM

Breezy Monday and I learned TICKTICKBOOM, which sounds like something I'd remember if I'd actually heard it, so I guess I haven't. Also made the acquaintance of STU and OLGA as clued, how do you do?

Today's nugget from the crossword vault is geographical-hey there ESTES Park, nice to see you again.

We were at the playground with our granddaughter who was starving as usual and the only option was a nearby food truck serving vegan Mexican, so we tried it, but even she couldn't eat it. It wasn't bad, but it was terrible.

Nice enough job, HZ. I Happily Zipped through this one and enjoyed myself, so thanks for all the fun.

Prospero ano nuevo to all, and if get a nuevo ano be sure to celebrate.

Erasmus 9:03 AM

TICK TICK BOOM definitely an outlier. I’d wager most solvers had never heard of it while pretty much everyone is familiar with the other three themers. I guess I’m an outlier too being a fan of Elon Musk. Pro free speech anti-censorship.😎

RooMonster 9:04 AM

Hey All !
Happy New Year!! 2024.
Don't forget the year when you first need to write it, as on a check. I know I'll probably forget.

Nice little puz. Trying to twist the Theme into being a New Year's Day theme. Let's see...
You could've had a party last night involving games, such as DUCK DUCK GOOSE. The fireworks might've gone TICK TICK BOOM. You might've yelled, "HIP HIP HOORAY" at midnight. You may have been consoled with "THERE, THERE, NOW. It's OK to wonder where the heck 2023 went." sympathy.

Or not.

Anyway, first of the year OO fest, seven of 'em. Nice. Easy peasy puz. Streak alive and well at 16.

This year I'm not counting partial, ala today's ROOK, that's my Resolution. Har.

I felt THERE THERE NOW was a nice change of pace easing out of the puzzle. Overall blended in some old favorites like TIARA and ESTES without a lot of three letter acronyms and PPP. Many thanks to @Rex for bringing us this blog for so many years, and starting off another year with so many good friends on the internet. Happy NewYear to all!

kitshef 9:36 AM

@Anonymous 8:36 - not everyone; I did acrosses also. Failed at the bottom with PLOt instead of PLOY (a better answer, IMO). I figured the clue for HE REST would some thing like "May __ __ in peace".

Anonymous 9:49 AM

My resolution is to actually solve one "Downs Only". Every time I try it's "Downs Only Until I Have No Idea And Have To Look At The Crosses"!!

Lewis 9:51 AM

Oops! I said in my post that STROP was a rare-in-crosswords semordnilap, when I should have said "rare-in-crosswords five-letter semordnilap". Semornilaps are quite common in crosswords.

Carola 10:07 AM

A playful puzzle to ease us into the New Year. Besides the repetitive theme answers, I liked how HIPS was followed by the illustrative HIP HIP. But GOOSE x GOOS - tell me about it! The migrators leave a real mess on our neighborhood's lakeside walking path. I knew OLGA Tokarczuk because a friend of mine is a huge fan, but I've never read any of her work; thank you, @Dr.A, for the nudge.

@Rex, happy new year back and thank you.

Bob Mills 10:18 AM

Easy except for TICKTICKBOOM (I had "ticktockboom" at first). Also, DUCKDCUCKGOOSE was a lucky guess.

'One absikytekt hirrubke cake,,,PAR us bit :average" in golf. It's exceotuibakkt good, Only professionals and the best amateurs shoot oar.

Nancy 10:34 AM

This was a nice Monday that, despite the kids' game, had fairly grown-up fill with no crosswordese and no names.

Still, even a good Monday makes me try to make the puzzle more interesting for myself. Solving "Downs only" is not my thing, but once I had the first two themers, I ran the alphabet for a first letter that would enable me to figure out the third ?CK-?CK answer. I couldn't come up with one.

That's because someone moved the goal posts and the third themer is not a ?CK-?CK answer. It's a ??P-??P answer.

So much for trying to make the puzzle more interesting for myself. I wasted some minutes, but since I don't time myself and I'm never in any rush, it didn't matter.

A thought on THERE, THERE NOW. A male friend of mine once told me about a scare that took place on a plane when he was traveling with his wife -- not a relaxed flyer under the best of circumstances. He said he could do little at the time but stroke her hand and say "there, there." And I'm thinking (though I wasn't rude enough to say so)--

I don't want someone cooing "there, there" to me. What earthly good is that? I want someone providing me with a dozen convincing reasons why the bleeping plane can't possibly go down.

Kid Phoneme 10:57 AM

@lewis thanks for the new (to me) word to chew on.

Nearly got through this one downs only. Couldn't quite pull COUNCIL out of my poor grappa-addled brain.

Anyone else catch the great Paul Anka late last night? Nice to see him off the grid for a change.

Happy New Year everyone!

Joe Dipinto 10:58 AM

I like how the vegan menu points out the fake "risotto" but doesn't blink at the crab or chicken selections.

I have no problem with THERE THERE NOW, it seems a common enough phrase. As soon as I saw the clue I filled it in.

On "Hey Paula"'s B-side, Paula ditches Paul in favor of Bobby, who is now The One. Paul apparently doesn't care, since he says nothing.

CHOO CHOO TRAIN

Bob Mills 11:05 AM

Sorry for the typo problem. I was saying that PAR is definitely NOT AVERAGE, as the clue suggested. It's a score attained only by professional golfers and the best amateurs. A really horrible clue.

I am very curious…why are you triggered by Elon Musk ? Is it because he bought twitter and allowed conservatives back on the forum? I just don’t get it? He was your EV hero and sends rockets into space so what has he done to offend you? Allowed people to speak ? The intolerant left amazes me…

burtonkd 11:46 AM

@Glen Laker, I put INTHEHEIGHTS in also, thinking they must have forgotten it made it to Broadway. It would have been nice to mention Jonathon Larsen, RIP, who wrote the musical. I should read the clue more closely.

@Lewis - I'm stunned that you would make a crossword 101 error. Augurs is the one you are looking for, not the tool with an "e". Happy New Year anyway!

Thank you RP for another entertaining and thoughtful year!

Knowing how antisemitic and crazy Elon musk is . Despite his genius I wouldn’t purchase a Tesla today .
Our world is filled with too much angry rhetoric / too bad he bought Twitter or whatever he calls it now - another forum for hate filled speech which the world does not need .
Hoping for a more peaceful new year

Newboy 12:32 PM

Well, there can be fun on Monday after all as Rex & others point out. New year and a new construction worker, so it seems like a good start for 2024. Was able to get about 90% with downs alone before hitting the cheat button on page top. Not peeking at the across clueing certainly seems like a great way to improve one's moral sinew, but holding a hand over the side of the iPad screen is taxing. Is there a way to resize the page to keep me honest.? Not sure if this practice will become habit, but it was amusing for today.

Oh, please. “Intolerant left” ??? Shouting “Fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire isn't covered by free speech. Alex Jones for example is a toxic liar who now has Xitter platform again. Let him rant away in his own living room without the Xitter bullhorn—that’s his right.

Anonymous 1:31 PM

So what is wrong with Elon Musk that is not in any way related to his just being a right winger?

- He is a hypocrite. He claims to oppose censorship on Twitter, but now he censors the left but not the extreme right.

- He is an unreliable friend. He let Ukraine use Starlink, and then yanked it out from under them without warning.

- He isn't that competent as a business leader. Tesla cars have their really good points but they have a large rate of production defects that he doesn't seem to be able to cut down.

- His self-promotion causes genuine social harm. His hyping of Hyperloop caused genuine harm to support for conventional mass transit. And now Hyperloop is dead but the harm to mass transit funding has been done.

- His products are based on swindles. He calls his cars self-driving, and people take him at his word, but the owner's manual says don't you dare let this car drive itself.

- He can't be trusted. He signs consent decrees and then violates them, at a cost to shareholders and the public. He says he will take Tesla private at $420 per share and doesn't.

- His role in his successes is far less than he claims. He had a role in making Paypal and Tesla big, but others had huge roles too.

- He has tweeted that Jews are pushing replacement of whites in western democracies. And then retracted along the lines of "sorry if I offended anyone."

- His views on employer-employee relations seem to be heavily influenced by the policies in place at his father's emerald mine in South Africa.

Other than that, he's a great guy.

Fun quick easy puzzle to start the year. But...PAR is not average in golf. Scratch golfers are relatively rare. There are very few workers now with DESKTOPS. Almost everyone now has laptops, so they can take their work everywhere with them.

Anonymous 3:37 PM

THERE THERE NOW feels like a common phrase to me, but the Google Ngram viewer shows its usage has dropped dramatically over the past several decades. I wonder if those who feel like it's obscure are on the younger side.

In any event, I feel like THERE THERE NOW is an attempt to soothe, while THERE NOW could have other connotations in some contexts. I feel like THERE NOW can be used as a substitute for "Hey, wait a second here," which THERE THERE NOW would never be used for.

Elon Usk is supposedly anti censorship EXCEPT when people criticize him. He barred people from Twitter who criticized. him. He fired employees who criticized him. He makes vicious ad hominem attacks on people who criticize him in other venues
He repeated notorious antisemitic statements. At heart, he believes that no one else should put any limits on what HE can do. ( which of course is a very dangerous way for a billionaire to act)So he is no more an advocate of free speech than Donald Trump.

Don’t know if any one will see this but I wanted to add that Jonathan Larson died in his 30’s from a cerebral hemorrhage just before the opening of his huge hit musical Rent. The Times obit mentioned his first musical so that made it easier for me to recall the title.

Torsos. The standard plural in English. And this is an English language crossword. Torsi is used I am sure in English. It has appeared in the Times crosswords But torsos is perfectly valid and much more common.

Ditto everything you just wrote and more. Humanity, inclusiveness, love, kindness, etc. Thank you for your post.

I also had In The Heights, which started off-Broadway in the US and had a 2021 film adaptation! Confusing to see that none of the downs worked at first…

I found this very repetitive.

HIP HIP HOORAY we awoke for a new year of grumbles and guffaws. PAR isn't "average" by the way.

Easy. A perfect beginner-friendly puzzle to draw in new crossword solvers. Agree with someone above who felt that COPYTHAT should have been clued as the revealer. 37A Relative of “Roger” in radio transmissions or a hint to the start to 20, 27, 43 and 51 Across.

Funny story about 20a. I was watching an old (I mean OLD, like with Regis Philbin) episode of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and the first ($100) question was about a "popular" kids' game, DUCK DUCK _____. And I didn't know it! Had I been on the hot seat I'd have had to use a lifeline! Never had I played this game, heard other kids playing it, or anything. One of the choices was a third DUCK; I probably would have guessed that. GOOSE certainly made no sense to me. To this day, had I not seen that program, I wouldn't have known.

Noticed: TORSO, HIPS, HIPHIPHOORAY mini-theme. PIES in the corners: Which one was Jack Horner in? KHAKI COATS crossing in the center.

Here we go again with unsavory names. It's just fill in a puzzle; you don't have to LIKE the guy.

Nothing scintillating, nothing objectionable. Par.

Wordle par.

There there now is the phrase I've always heard. There now sounds more like a chastisement. There now, don't do that or I'll send you to your room.
No soup for you!!!

KOI HIPS PLOY

SURELY, MERYL wouldn't STRIP,
her TORSO'S AGED for THAT ROLE,
NOW THERE's ALOT, HIP TO HIP,
HOORAY for HULA on A POLE!

Count me as another who disagrees with the clue for 40a: PAR is not 'average in golf'. PAR is an aspirational SCORE. If you shoot PAR all the time you're way above average. Even bogey golfers are in the top 85th percentile. PAR is not average.
This puz could have used a knockknockjoke.
Wordle birdie.

I agree with PAR not = average. Certainly was never MY average. But I guess the clue MEANT average for the PGA tour. As such, a player might eke out a living, but is unlikely ever to win an event.
