Feet in the city / MON 8-21-17 / Computer savvy office fellow / Friendly communist ghost / Head off to star at some pictures / Slim monarch who gets around fast

Constructor: Tom McCoy

Relative difficulty: Challenging (misplaced, strange)

THEME: THE GAP (39A: Something to mind ... in 18-, 24-, 47- and 58-Across) — you have to imagine a "gap" in the theme answers for the wacky clues to make any sense; so:

Theme answers:
  • URBAN LEGENDS => Urban Leg Ends (18A: Feet in the city? (3 wds.)
  • KINDRED SPIRITS => Kind, Red Spirit (24A: Friendly Communist ghost? (3 wds.))
  • QUICK THINKING => Quick, Thin King (47A: Slim monarch who gets around fast? (3 wds.))
  • GOOGLE IMAGES => Go Ogle Images (58A: Head off to stare at some pictures? (3 wds.))
Word of the Day: TOULON (42A: City in southern France) —
Toulon (French pronunciation: [tu.lɔ̃]; Provençal: Tolon (classical norm), Touloun (Mistralian norm), pronounced [tuˈlun]) is a city in southern France and a large military harbour on the Mediterranean coast, with a major French naval base. Located in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Toulon is the capital of the Var department. // The Commune of Toulon has a population of 165,514 people (2009), making it the fifteenth-largest city in France. It is the centre of an urban area with 559,421 inhabitants (2008), the ninth largest in France.[1] Toulon is the third-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille and Nice. You call that a "Mind THE GAP" puzzle? That's not a "Mind THE GAP" puzzle. *This* (NYT, January 17, 2013) is a "Mind THE GAP" puzzle (and a good one) (seriously, it is—much better than today's).

So many problems. You widened the grid for this? First, the whole "Mind THE GAP" premise really doesn't have much to do with putting a break into words. Find the gap, maybe, but you "mind THE GAP" so as not to hurt yourself by tripping on or otherwise stepping into an actual gap that is there in physical space. You don't provide it. It's just there. Also, THE GAP is terrible as a revealer. Full phrase or go home. THE GAP is a store. Stop it. Further, all you're doing is breaking words into two words ... that is the Full Extent of this puzzle's cohesiveness. Nothing related to subways, nothing related to anything. Just "hey I broke a word in two and there was wackiness." In so many ways, this theme is not ready for publication. It's undercooked *and* it's missing some crucial ingredient to make it all come together. As is, it's a runny mess. Moreover. TOULON is a bonkers word to have in a Monday grid, or any grid. On a Friday or Saturday, fine, but a Monday? It is a hilarious familiarity-outlier. Like ... nothing in this grid comes close to how not-well-known that answer is. The fifteenth-largest city in France? The ninth-largest urban center? On Monday? Astonishing that no one, from constructor, to editor, to testers, thought that was an issue. Lastly, this is really more a Wednesday-type theme. Clues were Monday-easy on the the non-theme stuff, but usually this level of wackiness, with zero indication of the base phrase that is being punned on, wouldn't see light of day til mid-week. So yeah, myriad problems here. Sometimes I think no one is minding the store.

Meanwhile, I had a nice weekend.

I attended Lollapuzzoola 10, the world's greatest NYC crossword tournament, and, well, see pictures, above. My wife and I did OK. The tournament was (as usual) great fun—jam-packed, with tons of new faces—and I got to meet interesting people (a lot of younger people just getting into crossword nerddom!) and eat interesting food and see a Mets game. Lovely lovely lovely. A great way to bring my summer to an official close (teaching starts Thursday). Thanks to Tyler Clark for covering for me Friday and Saturday. And oh, yeah, if you want to do the Fantastic tournament puzzles (all by top-notch constructors) you're in luck. You can get them here, cheap.

See you tomorrow.

@Johnny 12:13 a.m. I take the Metro North to/from Westchester. Every day I'm told to mind the gap. The same is true of LIRR.

    2. Watch the gap on Metro North

  2. On the tough side for me too, but it could be the 15x16 grid?

TOULON was a gimme. I spent a few days in the harbor there in the summer 1967 aboard a large gray ship with guided missile launchers. I never went ashore as it was not much of a tourist destination, plus I was saving money to return to college in the fall (however, I did hit the beach in Mallorca).

I also had trouble making sense of the reveal, so I'm inclined to mostly agree with @Rex on this one.

  3. No disagreement about the higher difficulty of this puzzle and how such a punny bunch of answers belongs on a Wednesday. But I'm surprised you didn't enjoy it. Every gap breaks the word into two words with a significantly different sound (soft g of legend to hard g of leg, short i of kindred to long i of kind, etc)., so in general I thought the wackiness bar was set quite high. I also liked the long answers, and wasn't irritated by any particularly subpar fill. We got Wednesday early this week, hurray!

  5. Didn't find the puzzle difficult, but it took my puzzle noobie husband to explain "the gap" in the words to me. Colour me red. How could I not love a puzzle with 6A in it.

Two goofs SECURE sIte before LINK and SWaM before SWUM. No biggies. Cute puzzle.

Sure sounds like the tournament was great fun, maybe someday.

Don't understand OFL's animus. In "breaking words into two words," you have to mind where you put THE GAP.

If only it held water politically, Kasparov the Friendly Ghost would've been a fun clue.

  8. I agree with Patrick, it was excellent puzzle and I liked the same things he did. How can you not appreciate thinking of Google as "Go Ogle"? Where is your sense of fun?

  9. I took the reveal as meaning Watch out before you pronounce this phrase ‘cause there’s a “gap” in one of these common words that you aren’t expecting. I love this kind of theme, the kind that has you taking a second look at a word or phrase and re-seeing it in a different light. Love it.

TOULON was easier to me than AMPLITUDE. Much easier. Wheelhouses and all that.

“Grease” then “Rhebus” (ouch) before RHESUS.

    “Take” one’s time before BIDE.

I agree that there’s no cohesiveness to the list. Sure.

But BUT…. I’ll take the looseness just to be shown that second take on URBAN LEGENDS. That alone was worth the price of admission. The QUICK THIN KING was good, too…

… but I tell ya, that LEG ENDS. It made me laugh. Excellent.

  10. Arrived in London last night and was repeatedly told to MIND THE GAP in the underground.

The other GAP puzzle was a Thursday puzzle and I don't think it is fair to compare a Monday puzzle with a Thursday puzzle.

These two cascos slowed me down:
    1D. {Done the backstroke, e.g.} SWAM-->SWUM

    39D. {Praise highly} LAUD-->TOUT

    Details here.

  13. @rex -- With great respect, always -- "... all you're doing is breaking words into two words...". No, you're breaking words into two words In Common Phrases, which is another ballgame, IMO. I've been trying to come up with other theme answers with no success (as it turns out, Tom, according to his notes, wrote a computer program to help him come up with answers).

I thought this was brilliant and funny. Truly, I don't think a reveal was needed, just the common phrases and their wacky clues -- terrific wordplay. The cluing was Monday level yet didn't insult the intelligence, and there is a SWEPT up, a BETTE by YOUBET, and a SAD sitting on an EMO. It's a clean grid, and for me, a wow and a smile. Thank you Tom.

And on this special day, to those experiencing full totality, with apologies to "White Christmas":

May your day be merry and black
And may all your retinas stay intact

    ReplyDelete
  14. I'm with @Patrick O'Connor on this one.

I'll disagree with @Lewis only on the issue of the reveal. I do think it is needed for those of us staring at URBAN LEGENDS and wondering why it the clue says "three words."

GO OGLE IMAGES is creepy funny. URBAN LEG ENDS is creepy absurdist funny. This should have been the Best Tuesday Puzzle Ever™.

Definitely not a Monday. A full minute over average.

So badly wanted laUd instead of TOUT (39D); caused some problems. The vague theme at 39A and the oh-so-out-of-place TOULON kept me guessing there.

And where did TUN (43D) come from?

I think I'll push this puzzle directly into the path of the next oncoming train.

This was a great puzzle. Fun and witty, not challenging, so yes, Monday. Loved AMPLITUDE.

  19. I loved, loved, loved this one! Also finished it in normal Monday time, maybe even a little faster since once you got the first theme answe the rest were easy. Only word I had to get from the crosses were Toulon. Anyone else love the word "amplitude?" Luv saying it!

I am normally bored to tears on Mondays but generally do the puzzle anyway so I can enjoy reading this blog and all of the comments. Today I did the puzzle with some degree of delight instead of boredom. Alas, OFL is a big meanie and has totally lost his sense of perspective as far as I'm concerned. I think he used to have one.

  22. Magnificent is the word for this one. Four great themers, plus some A+ fill (PLANKTON, ELI WHITNEY, AMPLITUDES). This is what every puzzle should be.

Had INtact before INFULL, so thought we were to going to get IT Gal and Necco wafer.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Way harder yet more enjoyable than a usual Monday for me. Things that slowed me down: SECUREsite, Necco wafer before NILLA, laUd before TOUT and having no idea what a TUN is. All the theme answers made me smile, once I'd figured out where to put THE GAP.
Seeing LEE clued as the general with "crowd with torches" in the same puzzle was a bit too topical and sad.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If this is a Wednesday puzzle misplaced on a Monday, I personally see that as a feature rather than a bug. It was certainly more fun and interesting than a typical Monday.

My favorite part of the solve was coming across the first clue that included "(3 wds.)" Made me wonder if this was some kind of throwback puzzle: How long has it been since multi-word answers have been clued this way in the NYT? Discovering that this was an essential part of the theme gave me a chuckle.

Okay, I downloaded the NYT puzzle at 7:35 a.m. Eastern and solved it. I checked the site for the daily commentary and this was a completely different puzzle. I downloaded the same link at 7:45 Eastern and this puzzle came up?

Did this happen to anyone else? I must have gotten a sneak peek at a future puzzle I suppose.

Loved this puzzle. Not sure why Rex didn't. If I had access to some later in the week puzzle (it seemed early weekish), it was a great solving experience as well.

  29. A puzzle based on the DOOK! What an inspired idea! And so well executed. It was witty, it was crunchy, it was everything you don't expect to see on a Monday. And to think -- before coming to this blog, I always skipped Mondays. This one would have been a real loss, and I wouldn't have even known it. The one DOOK I couldn't parse out was GO OGLE IMAGES. But what's not to love about KIND RED SPIRIT and QUICK THIN KING? Such fun!

  30. Wondered about TOULON and TUN which gave some pause but liked the puzzle and the theme a great deal. Would have preferred the revealer to be a Jos. 32. Speaking of GOOGLE, the GOOGLE logo today is making me seasick.

Liked your poetic eclipse warning, @Lewis (5:50 a.m.) -- I've heard they've run out of protective glasses in NYC. You may notice that I'm posting an hour earlier than usual. I woke up early and plan to go to the park this morning -- much earlier than usual -- so that I can get home safely before the [partial] eclipse begins at 1:23 p.m. My friend said: Just don't look at the sky. I said: When you're as absent-minded as I am, you just might look by mistake. And also, when the eclipse ends in NY at 4 p.m., the sun might be so low in the sky that it would be in your line of vision, whether you want to look at it or not. I plan to be home by 1 p.m. and will turn on the television and watch totality [which we don't get] in other parts of the country. Better safe than sorry, that's what I say. Be careful, everyone.

  36. Mondays are usually a bore but today was great.
Theme answers were quite funny to me.
Nice basketball diversion clue for bib.

Leg ends reminded me of an episode of Just Shoot Me where an air head writer struggled for another word for feet.
Sarcastic suggestion from coworker "Walking hands?"

Grab your eclipse glasses and enjoy!

  37. Apparently NY commuter lines are going all Anglophile -- it's certainly a British phrase, but I didn't mind it. A fun puzzle, and I don't really care if it's a Monday or not.

As several have remarked, it's really hard to give up on laUd, expecially once that U is confirmed by the cross. I needed the revealer to fix that, if for no other reason.

I have no objection to TOULON, but thought maybe TSK and PSST were too many for one puzzle.

This puzzle could have been made much more timely if 62A had been clued as "General with controversial statues."

  38. I lucked out and this one was in my wheelhouse. Solved it in record time after a long bus ride home solving all the puzzles I had missed over the last four days visiting upstate NY and moving the munchkin into his townhouse. The best things about the C2C bus were the wifi and really cushy seats which made it possible for even a carsick prone person such as myself to be able to comfortably solve puzzles on my iPad.

They even say "Mind the Gap" on some subways stops in NYC.

@Nancy, I might head over to the American Museum of Natural History today because they may have glasses and if not they are sure to have some special events.

No time to read the comments. We brought our youngest to Manhattan to start college. Did the puzzle in a brief lull. This was a challenging Monday. I did it in the hotel's paper. Part of the problem was the newsprint lettering is hard to read. Time for a new prescription.

  43. Agree with the ones who loved this. The most sophisticated Monday I can remember. Solving downs only I had to wonder what ApPLeITUnES had to do with measuring waves - and now wonder if iTunes has an algorithm that measures AMPLITUDES so that you're not constantly adjusting the volume (Pandora sure as heck does not).

And...LEE, MOB, IDIOTS. Is there a not-so-hidden message?

As for puz, agree it should've been run on Tuesday. Was slightly tougher than a MonPuz, but would've liked to see the whole MINDTHEGAP (10 letters) in the middle row. And ran tomorrow.

Have to admit not being able to parse GOOGLE as GO OGLE. Drat, cause that is funny! Wonder if that was what the originators were thinking.

Yesterday, VIDIOTS, today IDIOTS. Um, what are you trying to say?

The rest is good too, with PLANKTON, RHESUS, BELGRADE, AMPLITUDES, QUILT. Nice job, Tom McCoy.

"So many problems?" Methinks most of the problems in this case are you, Rex. I would think your 1st Place medal would have put you in a better mood. But instead you've come back more whiney and negative than ever. Call an ambulance. The nits are screaming.

This is one of the best Monday puzzles I can remember. Loved the theme and how it was executed. For example, how can you not like the reimagining of GO OGLE IMAGES?

Also appreciated the fact that this was not a mindless romp. Entries like AMPLITUDES, BASE RUNNER, and PLANKTON put some meat on this puzzle's bones and made it interesting.

fave moo-cow eazy-E MonPuz clue: { ___ Juan (lover)} = DON. In this rodeo, many of the clues were downright PeterGordonMonPuz-esque, in their feistiness. Good stuff.

Really enjoyed that there "All you're doing is breaking words into two words ... that is the Full Extent of this puzzle's cohesiveness. Nothing related to subways, nothing related to anything. Just 'hey I broke a word in two and there was wackiness.'" theme. Seems plenty complicated, for a MonPuz theme, to m&e. Do MonPuz themes hafta be related somehow to "subways"? I musta missed the memo on that, while off on our annual weeklong trip to upper Wisconsin. Got me a whole week of the NYTPuzs to do makeup tests on. Object to the potential "subways" spoiler on last week's MonPuz, btw. But, I digress.

@Rex's modesty extended to his including a photo of the "medal" he won in his post.

  60. I think the puzzle was just fine. I don't mind a TOULON on a Monday since it means I learn something on a day that is otherwise rather boring. I, too, got hung up on laUd, did a double-take on the clue for SWUM (done the backstroke had me shaking my editor head in disbelief), and seeing General LEE made me wince (though Connie Willis' "Lincoln's Dreams" portrays a very complex, not-easy-to-dislike man). Being here in the middle of not much, mind THE GAP was unfamiliar. And that's okay because URBAN LEGENDS was pure fun.

We will have 93% coverage here but it's overcast so I think we'll just get the dark and some very confused wildlife. For those who want a fun method for viewing without burning your retinas, use your phone's camera in selfie mode, turn your back on the sun, and watch the eclipse over your shoulder. NASA insists this won't damage your phone (or your eyes).

I hope, though, that you were able to buy the eclipse glasses at the M of NH and that you'll be out enjoying the 70% of the eclipse we're getting today.

Wm. C (10:29) (about yesterday)-- I actually did understand the meaning of RE in that context. And so I must admit that the puzzle was fair. But it provided a very belated "Aha", and only after the slog of coming up with a lot of phrases that initially made no sense at all. When I finally realized what was going on I was...underwhelmed. Perhaps I should have liked the trick more. But I really didn't. Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

The 80% eclipse here was wonderful.
Eerie strange filtered light and several minutes
of complete silence along with a gradual cooling and
    then return to mid-day warmth.
So thankful for the near-perfect conditions.

  71. Loved this Monday puzzle, and was well below my average time. TOULON was perfectly fine because the downs were so straightforward. URBAN LEG ENDS was just genius. I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree with Rex's review of this delightful puzzle, and also offer my respectful and wholehearted congratulations to him and his wife on their puzz solving prowess!

  72. Overcast here in the mid-south for the eclipse. The run up to totality made the mosquitoes think it was an extra, but very short, dusk, their favorite time of day to eat, so they swarmed with a vengeance! Bite hard, bite fast, bite often! (to the extent a bug can "think"). In ten minutes got 20 or more serious bites that reacted into real live whelps (usually they don't even bite me). After being bug bait, and it being overcast, in full, not even a chance of a "peeking eclipse", I retired to the safety of the screen porch. Next time.

Oh, and Rex, kudos on the pairs Lollapuzzoola win. But if you won the pairs, I'm guessing that to call yourself "King of CrossWorld" is a bit of usurpation that Ms. Parker may be somewhat miffed about. GOT and all. Shouldn't you, more properly, and for the sake of peace and tranquility in the realm, if not fairness, be merely "co-regnant?" Just wonderin'

Oh, and think about it. "Mind" the gap. As in, "see a gap in your mind's eye". I think it's a fine usage. And a nice AHA! A bit like those old images that become 3D if you stare at them fixedly for long enough. Suddenly, BAM, you can't see it any other way! Think different.

  74. I finished the puzzle in 7 minutes, which is about 5 minutes faster than my average Mon. I mostly went through the Down clues first, which were mostly gimmes. I then went back through the Across clues to clean up some blanks. The themers were all recognizable phrases, so I didn't even read their clues. Down, Across, Done. Then I checked the themer clues and got four good laughs on the re-parsing of the phrases. Genius! What an enjoyable and clever Monday puzzle!

Then I went to Xwordinfo thinking this might get a POW, but no, Jeff went on about the 16x15 grid, 81 words vs. 79 (!), etc. But at least he called it a pleasant solve, "nice and accessible for Monday solvers".

Next I read Rex's rant. Geez, what a pile of crap. Wrong in so many ways. I appreciate that I have learned a lot about puzzles in reading his blog over the years, but sometimes he's just really, really wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Just curious, have any of our Italian speakers read that 3 post all caps rant? I recognize a few words and can't help wondering what that is all about. Robo-posts don't usually come in three parts.

    ReplyDelete
  76. @Nighthawk's adventures (4:02 p.m.) make me glad I didn't have the protective glasses and therefore didn't stay in the park for the eclipse. I get eaten alive by mosquitos even when there isn't any eclipse. From the safety of my apartment, at least, the eclipse seemed to be a dud in NYC. It barely got overcast at all. It certainly didn't get dusky. At least 100 times a year it gets much darker in the daytime, right before a thunderstorm or even a heavy rain. Without all the hoopla, I wouldn't have had a clue that anything remotely unusual was going on.

I did go online to look at the various photos of totality. Those were awesome. I'm sure there will be a lot more on the news tonight. @Nighthawk -- sometimes very, very hot water applied to the bites works better than any anti-itch cream.

  81. @Nancy, through glasses the eclipse looked like an orange red crescent moon. Some kind woman I met on the way to the AMNH shared her glasses with everyone. I made a viewer out of a cereal box. My first hole was a little too big, but I redid the foil with smaller holes and it worked quite well. I had a series of white crescents inside the box.

Lots of people showed up at the American Museum of Natural History. All the cereal boxes were either gluten free or organic or both. Some young woman took a picture of my husband's cereal box that I used for the event because it matched hers. I could even see the clouds when they shadowed the sun.

The best effect however was the crescents made by the shadows of the leaves. You'll probably find photos on the NASA site that will show you better photos than what you might have been able to see if you'd had glasses.

The GAPS in other things that created shadows were fascinating. Colanders made some great shadow patterns.

  87. Just loved this puzzle! Laugh out loud funny answers.

I've been to ELBA and TOULON. Wonderful spice market in the latter. And plenty of naval lore to keepp any history buff busy.

@Nancy - just love your christening the theme as a DOOK theme.

@Robert A Simon - love the narrative of your joint-solving experience!

@Aketi - the colander method is my absolute favorite - my sister has a "vintage" one with a beautiful star pattern - made for a beautiful effect!

I took a wine box, cut two holes in the side and jammed my binoculars in, popped a piece of white paper in the opposite side, then pointed the binoculars at the sun.
    Magnificent!
I was the most popular person at the lake!

Little kids were fascinated - I took the opportunity to urge them towards fascination with science - one of them says he wants to be a meteorologist and astronaut.

Even with a haze of thin clouds, my device provided a very clear picture from beginning to end. In fact, you could see the clouds scudding by in the 1" diameter image. The sky cleared completely about 15 minutes past max, and it was actually less interesting.

I was surprise at how much of the sun did get eclipsed up here in CT. It was enough to cast an odd glow - noticeable, but barely so. I don't know how it affected animal behavior - I could only see human animals in the vicinity!

@Nancy - the eclipsing sun is no more dangerous than any other sun. In fact, it is actually a tiny bit less dangerous. THE differenceIS that during an eclipse, people are wont to stare straight at the sun to try to see it with the naked eye. Hence all the dire and hyperbolic warnings.

Yeah, you guys are right: remove the (3 wds.) hints and stick it in a, say, Thursday. TOULON, though bigger than I thought, did not belong. A couple of misdirects--one leading to a writeover. It's a FEAT to include paired 10's outside the theme, but when I saw that 12-down was starting with SECURE, I naturally finished it off with sIte. And just a glance across at sUV seemed fine. Till I read the clue. The other one was laUd; hand up for that one.

"Mind THEGAP." This must be a sign in the London tube, I guess; when I was there ('60's) I don't recall seeing it. Over here? Not a thing. I totally agree with OFL about this revealer: it's weak. The themers were kinda fun to do, but it's like he said. Undercooked. Runny: perfect description. I give props to those tens, though.

It's always nice to have the Divine Miss M. for a DOD candidate, but today's sash goes to WENDY Williams; I'd like to GO OGLE her. An incredible 11 U's means that Tom has at least one fan today. As for me, put it back in the oven for another hour. Bogey.

Yeah, Mind THEGAP is pasted all over the London tube. So much so that the second time I was there c. 2007 I bought a baseball cap with the Mind THEGAP logo.

I thought this was a sweet puzzle, on a Monday yet, and one not to be SWEPT under the carpet. Funny, punny, and fanciful. Mind THE GAP was an appropriate revealer, pointing out something that needs to be heeded in interpreting the themers.

There was "crunch" (kind of dislike that word), great downs and clues that put up a fight.

During my 4-month foray around France, I cycled twice from Le Pradet to TOULON which is a very interesting city, and it has excellent beach restaurants on the Mediterranean and an impressive naval harbour. Even the city centre was cycle-friendly. There you go, a little travelogue.

An easy and enjoyable puzzle. Now I'm going to GO OGLE some IMAGES of TOULON.

  107. This is just a request for people to post comments about a puzzle on the blog for that puzzle, not comments about a Sunday puzzle on a Monday. For us in syndicate land, the Sunday puzzle is much more current (only a week old instead of a month) and your comments could be a spoiler. I know, the rest of the world is no longer reading the blog for this puzzle, and I don't want to post on today's blog, as that would spoil the puzzle for me when it appears in my paper.

The puzzle was pretty Monday-ish to me, except for Toulon, which wasn't a problem anyway. But I'd have liked for there to be some relationship among the theme answers, more than that they were just two words that could be three. But I guess the pun puzzles are often that way, just three or so random puns.

@foggy - didn't YEW know? U is M&A's favorite vowel and we often get a count of just how many show up in a puz. Now YEW know the rest of the story.

  109. Alexander was neither quick nor thin. Sadly, both he and the Queen consort suffered a terrible fate. It's such a Draga...
The conspirators searched the palace and eventually discovered the royal couple and murdered them in the early morning of June 11, 1903. King Alexander and Queen Draga were shot and their bodies mutilated and disemboweled and, according to eyewitness accounts, thrown from a second floor window of the palace onto piles of garden manure. The King was only 26 years old at the time of his death. King Alexander and Queen Draga were buried in the crypt of St. Mark's Church, Belgrade. (Wiki)

It was great to see the dual eraser, as I'm an eraser fan. As some of you know, I bring a supply of brightly colored mechanical pencils to tournaments and pass them about like Halloween candy. The lead seems to last forever - the eraser, not so much. (Not sure how the lead does that. Does it twist around? Get replaced? I've tried to take one apart after it finally ran out of lead, but no answers were apparent.)

But then, @Rondo passed out Pink Pearls at the last Minnesota tourney, and that should last a long, long time.

    Pencils rock.
