THE WEDNESDAY 6/23/10 Puzzle

THE WEDNESDAY 6/23/10 Puzzle

In case you are solving on-line (on in AcrossLite) — this is what the grid looks like in the paper (important):

Puzzle Note: In the print version of today's puzzle, some of the horizontal rules of the grid are not solid all the way across. They appear broken, for reasons relating to the puzzle's theme. Specifically, the horizontal rules under the following squares are not solid:
  • Row #3 -- under squares 5-7
  • Row #5 -- under squares 9-13
  • Row #8 -- under squares 6-10

  1. And it gets better. The notepad for Across Lite incorrectly indicates which squares are underlined, each being off by a square or two, plus or minus.

They are correctly indicated on the Across Lite puzzle I have.

whoops...I meant to also say, I couldn't make heads or tails of this until I saw the note. I never catch those across lite notes.

  3. Luckily, the note on the applet cuts off before it actually lists the squares that are underlined.

  4. Across Lite indicates the right squares. The fifth square = the fifth square, not the square numbered five. (That is, the square numbered five is the sixth square, since there was a blackened square that was not numbered.) It's deja vu all over again.

Yeah, the notepad wasn't correct for my AL either. I struggle with a lot of Wednesday puzzles, but not tonight. I think this was a record time for me. I'm guessing it was an easier one for Wed.

As someone noted elsewhere, Eva Marie Saint also tilts a nod toward Notorious Mt. Rushmore.

After all the warnings I stared at RARE for a while, convinced that something was missing that would reveal the unseen theme. Had to come to the blog to figure out the clue.

Axilla! Got it with just the X. Does that indicate a crossword O.D.?
