The letter C without the stroke indicates 4/4 time, i.e., 4 quarter notes per measure, whereas alla breve is 2 half notes per measure. On the printed page their measures look identical (since one half note equals two quarter notes), but in alla breve one should feel only two strong pulses per measure, rather than four.
