By all accounts, I’m sure he’ll be missed.<br /><br />Thought the top half of the puz was a real Y-fest, even beyond Billy Ray’s daughter and anagram. As I look back on the grid, I have no write-overs, so this anagram exercise couldn’t have been very difficult at all.<br /><br />Admit it, you all wanted to pull out your wallets and check that Latin word, right? I almost did, thinking it only fair game, but let the crosses take care of it. Somewhere (not sure where), I saw a short video of Merl telling a joke about a vampire (my memory has greatly faded), but what I do recall is a wonderful raconteur telling a corny joke and it showed me that puzzles are made by real people with wonderful personalities. I never met or corresponded with Merl, but after reading all the other tributes I know I missed out on a great opportunity to connect with a truly amazing person. <br />Life is too short and Merl's passing only reinforces my desire to live every day to its fullest. I cannot overemphasize what a wonderful community that crossword puzzles have created. In difficult times, it was something we made ourselves do no matter how tired or sick or sad or angry we were -- and it ALWAYS helped. I usually sit across from him and work it upside-down, an image so "us" a friend mentioned it in the toast at our wedding. Mr. Reagle always made us laugh (and/or groan -- "Oh god, REALLY, Merl?" was a common pun-induced refrain!). I never met him, but I say without a shred of exaggeration: that man made a real difference in my life, and we will miss him very much.<br /><br />As for THIS puzzle, am I really the only one who knows that Jason Voorhees wore NARYATHING over his face in "Friday the 13th"?
