Took a while to make sense. My problem was in the SE. with the clue to 52 down: "Tums, for instance." In the font used in the Las Vegas Sun, the letter m is indistinguishable from the combination of r + n, thus rn. So I read "Turns, for instance," as being much more probable than Tums (as we know, the First Word in a Clue is always Capitalized). Only after getting everything else did it dawn on me about that clue. Really, you cannot tell--even with a magnifying glass.

Anyway, I did it, and it was a workout, and different, so I liked it. If this was unintentional or a coincidence, that is one thing. But if it was “inspired” by the original, that is a bad thing. You can only “borrow” so much before it crosses a line. The theme came easy, and helped in the SE (had PENAL, expected COLONY but it wouldnt fit, and when I got the first two themers I went back and added ANT three times and was done)

Having never seen the earlier comparable puzzle, this was all new to me and I thought it a bit clever. While the similarities to the prior puzzle seems more than coincidence, the constructor acknowledges this in the NYTXW blog, so if he stole it he didn't hide it, because he references the earlier puzzle(s) in his comments.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35115061.post-3763531025140012272022-01-06T19:20:08.069-05:002022-01-06T19:20:08.069-05:00SCHOOL does not work in the original puzzle in the...SCHOOL does not work in the original puzzle in the crosses.
