Vaguely remembered the name after getting that Z. Problem was ZINCED. Kept seeing the C pronounced as an S because the other cross was SELF IMPORTANCE (C pronounced as an S). A D'OH kind of brain glitch.

Elsewhere ERDOS and DORADA required crosses. The good long downs and across answers emerged soon enough to help put it all together.

LOTTA fun with this one.leftcoastTAMnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35115061.post-86539246247057087652018-11-10T14:05:22.928-05:002018-11-10T14:05:22.928-05:00Good Saturday puzzle of medium difficulty which in...Good Saturday puzzle of medium difficulty which initially looked rather challenging. However, I entered via SAHL (Canadian), SOS PADS, ARC0, and LOTsA (changed immediately). At the controversial square 11, I mean, it *had* to be Z. Galvanizing screams ZINC.

At 11D, I initially had DEAd, but understanding that those no longer with us would be offended, changed it to DEAF, understanding it in the metaphorical sense. Sue me.

There were a LOTTA great clues and entries throughout this delightful grid. Quite a feat for a debut. I get the point, but those so afflicted will not be amused.

This was a novel experience, in that I didn't know anything at all FOR SURE. Had a couple ideas but couldn't corroborate. Finally I just winged it and put down my first two educated guesses--right down the middle with SOSPADS and SETTLES. Had to start somewhere. And then from there things just sort of opened up, and before I knew it I was done. Didn't know SZA at all, but the down had to be ZINCED. I wondered too why he bent over backward to cram that Z in there...but looked up SZA post-solve--and promptly voted her DOD.

Cool debut, IMO, and it's always nice to see the constructor visit our humble abode to record feedback.
