Anyhow, quite a few negative comments. I'm not too much of a stickler for crossword rules. As long as the clues and answers make some sense I'm good. This seemed to me a well constructed puzzle with a good mix of challenge and reward with thankfully a minimum of proper nouns. Solving the themers helped solve the rest of the puzzle, and the solving the rest of the puzzle helped solve the themers. In short, I liked it. Line drive to shortstop, who is moving toward second to cover. Catches the ball, tags lead runner who is right in front of him, and continues running toward first and runs down and tags trail runner. Shortstop has the speed advantage because runner has to stay in base path while shortstop can take shorter line.<br /><br />There is a brilliant article from the Penn Law Review in the sixties called The Common Law Origins of the Infield Fly Rule, which traces the late 1800s history: fielders started deliberately dropping popups in order to turn double plays, and a couple of umpires started calling the batter out and the play dead. Only rule in baseball that was invented by umpires on the fly (ugh) rather than passed as a law. Baseball later codified it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35115061.post-75200503531667445892021-05-02T20:21:02.479-04:002021-05-02T20:21:02.479-04:00yep! with the exception of "arty-farty,"...yep! with the exception of "arty-farty," a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday puzzle.
