This isn't fair game for a national-level puzzle.
(2) Similarly, the bread is "Naan" (double-a); "nan" is a different word. It is collective, as is "bread"; one rarely talks about "naans".
(3) "Smart pills" out here is still a generic term for a scam remedy, perhaps for someone who got beaten with the "stupid stick". It is not applied to any particular commercial offering or class of substances.
(4) OUT OF SORTS is a common phrase. IN BAD SORTS is not.
(5) SSNs are not job application info. The SSN is something you supply *after* you're hired. Until then, it's none of their business.
(6) SAC and VASTS shouldn't be in even a Saturday puzzle.
I did manage to get SAC from crosses, but only because I know that Athena's breastplate is the origin of our word AEGIS.

There are some lovely entries in this puzzle, but the required ugly support sucked out most of the enjoyment therefrom.Prunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00224476641730508311noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35115061.post-30499719121591254982013-12-17T01:40:24.282-05:002013-12-17T01:40:24.282-05:00yeah, pretty racist puzzle, all in all... I've never seen "naan" spelled with one "a" or "Sauk" spelled "Sac", and either of these could have had clues based on different meanings. There are no Unos in my state, so 16-A didn't help me. I went with "jaw" for 11-D which led to "wags" for 18-A. I did like the use of the same clue for 14-D and 28-D, but that's about the only thing I got in that quadrant.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-35115061.post-67156602356168860842013-12-14T20:51:14.260-05:002013-12-14T20:51:14.260-05:00@SiS - that's a great BUTTDIALED story. On the other hand, I joined those who were frustrated with the SW corner. Tried "angry" and "close" ENCOUNTERS, but never got the right one. Not helped by NAan, a writer I've only briefly heard of, and the awful INBADSORTS. Who says that? Also made the jIBE/jaw error, which left the NE looking frazzled, but never sorted it out.
