But, PERONI, JOHN HENRY, ACHILLES, ACURA, and JANE EYRE made the North malleable (hi, @Spacey). Years ago I bought a print of The Hay Wain, by Constable for my Mom, and learned about the Haywain Triptych by BOSCH, so that was almost a gimme, too.

Down South, especially the SE, it was pretty slow going, but HANGING ON gave me the "I", so I "knew" it was IN A (something). Last answer was TRIOLET which doesn't sound like an 8-anything, and I'll never remember that one.

The puzzle, though, was a good one. JAZZHANDS is totally new and needed it to get the BADJOKE (HAR HAR), BOSCH and CRAZE. Here's the north story:

JANE and JOHN OPENDOORS in the NE; EASY, no NEGS. I'm thinkin' HEGOTGAME. ALREADY INCHES away from the center, I ACEIT with FLYING colors; no ACHOLLES heel there. Then things begin to cool off. As usual, the NW produces SUBZERO conditions--but once I get the BADJOKE (HARHAR!) it's all good.

Then we get to Dixie. The SW is extremely difficult to ASSESS if you have eStEem in that spot. The only HOTSPUR I ever knew was the English soccer team at Tottenham. Grasping at STRAWS, I tried REDROBIN...and it was right!

SE was nearly my undoing. I am not intellectual, so I assumed "Les ______" beginning with F was simply FrerES, which led me, a la Charlie Daniels, to "rosin" up my bow. Then, silly me, the only thing I could think of for "Blaze of Glory" was Kenny Rogers. Duh. What could a biker have a nasty one of? At long last, SPILL spilled its guts, and everything got fixed, but the SE indeed looked like the aftermath of Sherman's march.

KIR, PERONI and FAUVES were total WOEs. I finished by HANGINGON and felt like a SUPERHERO...okay, that's a bit much. But the triumph factor is again high. DOD VIOLA Davis is a fine actress, and--well--a "fine" actress, if you get my drift. We were on a Suzuki 750 in mountainous Montana. Paved road turned to gravel turned to mud. Many white crosses on the parameters. Rain, then sleet, then ice. When we at last reached the 'highway' and asked, why the crosses? response was (as expected) "That's where they bought it".
