Catholics worship saints, and the better known ones have a special day in the year dedicated to them. Furthermore, Catholic parents used to be told to give their children the names of saints. The net result for children was that there was a second day in the year on which they could expect personal presents, the day dedicated to the saint after whom they were named. B.t.w.
